Gentle Parenting vs. Permissive Parenting

How to stay warm and firm without losing your authority.

Quick script:

Kind does not mean permissive. Calm can still be clear.

The difference

Permissive parenting avoids limits. Mindful parenting holds limits with warmth. The child gets connection, but the boundary still stands.

Warm and firm sounds like this

  • “You really want that. The answer is still no.”
  • “I hear you. I will not change my mind about hitting.”
  • “You can be upset. I will help you through it.”

Why parents slip into permissiveness

Many parents become permissive because they are afraid of repeating harsh parenting. A kind boundary is the middle path: no shame, no threats, no collapse.

Practice phrase

Try this formula: validate the feeling, state the limit, offer the next safe step.
